The world’s first dual purpose stormwater and motorway tunnel. SMART is a high performance and unique urban infrastructure for the Government of Malaysia. The firstof- its-kind in the world, SMART has attracted international attention for its outstanding engineering design of a dual-purpose system that incorporates a 3 kilometers double-deck motorway within a 9.7 kilometers stormwater tunnel.
Today, SMART serves as a flood mitigation system that has saved Kuala Lumpur city in millions in damages during the yearly seasonal monsoon, and at the same time help alleviate traffic congestion to and from the southern artery of Kuala Lumpur’s capital business district. Without a doubt, the ingenuity of SMART’s dual purpose system has put Malaysia on the map of international tunnelling and engineering.
