Southern Tainan Sub-Central District Park, Tainan, Taiwan
The Dream Lake, also known as the Dutch Basin, was an important water source during the Dutch Colonial era. The Lake is also the source of huxi River, an important waterway in Tainan City. To restore Zhuxi River to its historical glory and expansion, geological drilling surveys were carried out with landscape designs and well-balanced site excavation and landfilling strategies. Curved water banks with layered wetland vegetation teeming with fireflies help to restore the region’s natural ecologies.
Wooden platforms were constructed on the shores of the Dream Lake for visitors to enjoy its serene beauty. Open waters provide a diverse habitat for many organisms. Flat farmlands were transformed into an urban wilderness with complex landscapes. Footpaths traverse
along changing contours, allowing visitors to appreciate the seasonal beauty of the Park
from different viewing angles. For flood control, the open water bodies are connected to
surrounding drainage systems to accommodate massive runoff during heavy rain. These
water bodies also help to modulate urban microclimates to offer a more comforting
ambient temperature and humidity while perfecting the ecological museum and park
located in the heart of Tainan City.
