In the process of urban development, National Taipei University of Technology gradually transitioned into an open, multiple, and international university. The Eco-campus scheme of National Taipei University of Technology spawned out of the integration of technology, humanity and ecology, which is the central motif of campus development. The scheme combines districts, islands and vertical green wall, and by utilizing specific characteristics throughout the campus, it creates ideal natural environment both for human beings and aboriginal organisms to fit in. The whole campus has efficiently reduced the urban heat island phenomenon, and consequently became the cold island among Taipei City.

Winner Heritage (Restoration/Conservation) Category Edificio Galeria, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

In the Galeria project, Tishman Speyer has created a world class, state of the art facility within a dramatic classical shell. Through its renovation, the city of Rio de Janeiro has recovered an important part of its history, setting a new standard of quality in a once undervalued region of the city.

Tishman Speyer recognized that the Sul America headquarters represented a unique opportunity to retrofit and reposition a quality asset at a time of high growth and limited supply in the local market. The building was purchased by Tishman Speyer in 2007, and the Sul America Insurance Company exited the building in 2009. During the interim period, Tishman Speyer worked with a local architect to reimagine the project, closing interior shafts and adding a 9th floor to maximize potential area. With floor-to-ceiling heights of 2.75 meters and floor plates as large as 3,000 square meters, a true Class A asset was born.

The Galeria building project received considerable press at its delivery, recognized at the symbol of the city center’s recovery after decades of disrepair. The project was awarded the 2009 ADEMI Prize for Outstanding Retrofit Project. It was also awarded by FIABCI/Brazil Master Imobiliário Prize for Best Commercial Building. A book chronicling the history of the project and its restoration was published by a local historian.

Setia Alam was envisioned as a collection of ecovillages. Our goal was to kick start a community where people from all walks of life would have the opportunity to enjoy the best quality of life the 21st century has to offer, yet without taking more from the Earth than they give back.

To this end, the village concept offered the ideal solution. The traditional village is both practical and attractive. It is of a human scale; not only is it just the right size for a community, it is easier to plan for open spaces and facilities. Finally, it is egalitarian, with room for inhabitants from every strata of society.

By incorporating sustainability into the DNA of the traditional village, we re-invented it as an ecovillage. Our objective was to address a number of factors. From a marketing point of view, it gave the project a point of differentiation.

But far more important is the fact that it represented our client’s response to the threat of climate change. This concern was reflected in the rapidly growing number of Malaysians who are becoming aware of the need to take personal responsibility for the future of our planet.

It has been most gratifying to watch Setia Alam take shape as a realisation our original vision. Midway through its development, the township has already grown into a vibrant community. And the ecovillages, which are now called Residential Villages, are genuinely safe havens for its residents.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

PJ Trade Centre is an office project with a bold design that is based on a Malaysian paradigm and is rooted in the local culture, climate and context. PJTC sits on a 5.4 acre site and consists of 4 office towers, with over 1 million square feet of office space. The project was completed in December 2009 and is now fully occupied.

Since its completion, PJ Trade Centre has won top awards for commercial (office) design, landscape architecture and interior design. It is also a financial success for its investors.

THE ARCHITECTURE

The external design is based on two main ideas: 1. To craft an energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly building with simple local materials, mainly overburnt bricks, concrete ventilation blocks and fair-faced concrete;

2. To create a building that will weather naturally and elegantly in the harsh tropical monsoon climate, requiring minimal maintenance of the façade in the long term.

PLANNING

PJTC complements the existing environment in two ways.
1. A 2.5 acre forest plaza was created at the front of the project which gives the impression that the forest has extended from the hills into the very heart of the development. Over 1,600 trees were planted in the development.

2. The façade of the buildings consist mainly of textured and earth tone materials that allow the building to look weathered immediately upon completion and fit into the surrounding rustic granite hills.

TO TREAD GENTLY ON THE EARTH

The attitude is to keep things simple, economical and unpretentious, using a sustainable, eco-friendly and responsible approach. The façade are not plastered nor painted, neither are the walls and ceiling in the car park.

This is best seen in its 9-metre high glass lantern lobbies, a modest but comfortable and airy space, with no air-conditioning or artificial lighting.

My Waterway@Punggol is Singapore’s first man-made waterway. It injects a new lease of life to the former agricultural farmland through novel techniques, transforming Punggol Town into a vibrant waterfront town. Located at the North-Eastern edge of Singapore, it is flanked by two rivers, which were dammed to form two new reservoirs. A pipeline was originally required to transfer the water between both reservoirs. However, the Housing and Development Board worked with various government agencies to conceptualise a 4.2km landscaped waterway, creating a waterfront living experience for 21,000 homes along the waterway. The planning, design and construction of the waterway was challenging as the waterway has to meander through the town and integrate seamlessly with surrounding development parcels.

The waterway provides opportunities for leisure, recreational and educational activities in the heartlands. It is envisioned as the ‘River of Life’ for the community to celebrate the idea of ‘Green Living by the Waters’. It was conceptualized based on 3 key elements – People, Green and Water.

The design incorporates the history of Punggol through a series of heritage panels at the Heartwave Wall and Heritage Trail. Footbridges, adopting the ‘posts and stilts’ character of fishing villages, serve to educate the public of the historic past, bringing back memories of old Punggol. Spaces along the promenades are integrated with common green of adjoining housing parcels, resulting in larger communal spaces for community activities. Eco-friendly materials were adopted, mangroves and floating wetlands were introduced to promote biodiversity and enhance the water quality. Enhanced greenery is also introduced along the promenade, resulting in the waterway being a blue and green lung in the Punggol Town.

Construction of the waterway, costing approximately SGD225 mil (or approximately 141 mil Euros), began in April 2009 and took 2.5 years to complete. It was officially opened on 23 October 2011.

Designed by world-celebrated master architect Daniel Libeskind, Reflections at Keppel Bay is a symphony of six glass towers and 11 villa apartment blocks comprising 1,129 luxury homes along a 750-m shoreline.

An architectural feat, the alternating heights and double curvature of six glass towers of 24 and 41 storeys allow for an interplay of changing light planes and reflecting angles, while the use of different glass surfaces of varying shades helps to create an interest-capturing multi-dimensional and pixelated façade. The towers joined by sky bridges which incorporate nine landscaped sky-decks at different levels offers pockets of open spaces and platforms for a near 360-degree views of the spectacular surrounds. Topping the towers are steel crowns filled with tropical greenery befitting the lifestyle of living in an exclusive penthouse.

The interior of the apartment units was meticulously designed to provide excellent layouts with spacious rooms to optimize the view of the waterfront and lush landscape.

Sandy Island, Singapore

Sandy Island is a private residential development of eighteen waterfront villas situated in Sentosa Cove. Designed by Italian architect Claudio Silvestrin, each villa is unique but forms an exclusive collective through its architectural language. Assimilated into the verdant plots surrounded by calming waters, the development amplifies the notion of island resort living.

Turning a site constraint into an advantage, villas are designed to be grand piano-shaped with the more expansive side enjoying the water view; this plan optimises land use while giving each unit a unique layout that allows for distinct features, including interesting geometry of staircases and roof gables which follow the ‘piano curve’.

The villa design exhibits a minimalist approach. Tall monolithic facades that rise to the roof line, clean uninterrupted surfaces and natural materials like stone and timber combine to articulate the modern tropical style. Three sides of the villa exteriors are clad in stone, paired with timber screens rising to second floor level, enhancing privacy while reflecting the tropicality of the locale. Linear architectural elements extend into the landscape. Simple geometric forms expressed in natural materials combine to create a series of outdoor living spaces, which meld into the surrounding landscape. Plot boundaries are delineated by soft but dense hedges of plants and trees, instead of hard fences and gates to further intimate the feel of a tropical haven.

To recreate the rainforest atmosphere, approximately 74 percent of the site was dedicated for landscaping. This tremendous amount of plot ratio assists to return a substantial amount of foliage back to Mother Nature. Eighteen Khaya trees of 30 years old, which were otherwise to be felled, were transplanted from a nearby site on Sentosa to conserve the island’s environmental heritage. The notion of the rainforest continues in expressions at various levels. Interspersed with these mature trees are layering of other species of trees and shrubs, giving a lush visual appearance as one moves through the island.

From location to architecture to landscape design, Sandy Island enhances the country’s international standing as a liveable city in a vibrant garden setting.

Novena Lifestyle and Medical Hub, Singapore

The Novena Lifestyle and Medical Hub is a new mixed-use development with buildings built in different phases. The development houses retail, food & beverage (F&B), hotel and medical spaces. It comprises two seamlessly connected developments, Square 2/Novena Medical Center and Oasia Hotel/Novena Specialist Center. The purpose built complex demonstrates the developer’s innovative spirit. It created two first-of-its-kind real estate products in Singapore with the integration of medical centers with retail space and hospitality. The completion of the purpose built development amalgamates retail, medical and hotel facilities, turning into reality the government’s vision for the Novena precinct as an urban community with a rich variety of commercial and medical developments in close proximity to the city. The developer’s efforts also contribute to the community, furthering the government’s efforts in establishing Singapore as a medical hub of Asia.

In the planning of both developments, the developer made deliberate efforts to ensure accessibility and seamless connectivity between various external infrastructures and within the buildings. Underground connections were constructed forming a pedestrian network linking Novena MRT station and the adjacent buildings. It offers visitors, Singapore residents and international patients to Novena Medical Center great convenience and easy connectivity to all that they need.

To minimize the impact on the environment, the developer worked closely with the architect and the main contractor to improve the environmental performance while supporting sustainable and profitable business activities. The team established an Environmental Management System to control the environmental impact of the operations by implementing activities such as; controlling of air emission, and waste discharge to reduce pollution. In addition, it was conscientious in meeting the applicable legal and other requirements and continually improved the management quality by means of (ISO 9001 / OHSAS 18001 / ISO 140001) as the management tools.

The new centre of Zaandam, directly north of the capital Amsterdam, is one of the most successful city centre projects in The Netherlands. Within the space of a few years, the city centre has been transformed into a bustling place to meet and go out, combining living, shopping, leisure and working. The public space has been completely overhauled, including a newly dug canal. Renowned architects designed buildings in a style that elaborates on the Zaan architecture, giving the centre its own distinct appearance. Visitor numbers have risen dramatically, with tourists now coming especially to see the centre.

Quill 6 was developed as a grade ‘A’ office building for HSBC. The 24-storey building with a 4-storey basement levels constructed on a relatively small site fronting one of the busiest streets in Kuala Lumpur and bordering a river and an underground tunnel and station, is achieved through no small feat. Owing to limited storage and maneuverability on a small site, one of the strategic construction management decisions was to reduce 50% of construction waste generated by prefabrication of parts off-site.

Quill 6’s low energy design implementations allow 75% natural day lighting with unobstructed view to generously landscaped pedestrian walkway and green rooftop terrace and on to rainwater harvesting and recycling areas per floor.

The establishment of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter was the largest brown-field conversion project in Central Europe during the last years, where an internationally known and reputed former porcelain factory was converted into a cultural quarter, saving all values of the heritage and putting them into new and sustainable 2st century use. The aim of the project was to rehabilitate the most valuable architectural areas of the Zsolnay Factory and thereby create an exquisitely renovated building complex which, while protecting the built-up heritage, will integrate such cultural and educational functions that will satisfy the demand of the inhabitants of the city and region for these services at high level, will promote tourism in the city and the region and will help the creative industries strike roots in the quarter. The quarter has been ‘divided’ into four thematic quarters, serving the needs of the different target groups, mainly related to the different age of the buildings.

Pavilion of Future, Pavilion of Angel Life and Pavilion of Dreams are combined to be called together as Xinsheng Triple Pavilion. With the adoption of “Flower and Technology” as the subject and the undulating organic shape instead of the squared building as the appearance, the exhibition subjects inside the pavilions not only have high technology advanced techniques, but also have the plant greenhouse with natural flavor, and the exhibition of aesthetic space. The buildings show concretely the new generation green thought, inclusive the greenhouse roof, which utilizes energy saving heat isolation materials such as thin film cover material (ETFE) and low-emission (LOW-E) glass to not only block the radiation heat but also keep cool with constant temperature, other roofs with large area solar panels installed, and the “aquatic plant purification channel” planned in the Park. These kinds of designs make the Xinsheng Triple Pavilion become one of the greenest building in the Taipei City. The Taipei Flora Expo makes Taipei City become a green and beautiful garden city and a Taipei prefecture, which is colorful, artistic and alive.

Sopron Monastery Retreat Centre, Sopron, Hungary

The project – in line with the tender of EEA Financial Mechanism (Norwegian Fund) – was a complete renovation of a listed national heritage building, the former Pauline, later Carmelite monastery in Sopron, Hungary, and its transformation into an international retreat, education and meditation centre with all the necessary facilities (accommodation, restaurant, special purpose spaces). The general objective of the developer was to remain true to the monastery’s original spiritual atmosphere by transforming it into a place for reflection, education and meditation, run on a non-for-profit basis by a global initiative, World Servers Foundation (Geneva).
