Mangala Resort & Spa, Pahang, Malaysia

Acquired in 2002, this 400-acre land in Gambang, Pahang that was laid barren by more than 70 years of mining, has been transformed into an environmentally sustainable and ecological paradise.
Mangala Resort & Spa occupies 62 acres, while its surroundings have been rehabilitated into lush greenery and water features.

In order to kick-start the rehabilitation process, empty fruit bunches were applied to the soil. This fertilising material went through the process of slow decay before becoming a thin layer of topsoil, optimising the soil composition and eventually making it ideal for replantation. Various tropical trees were then planted to attract flora and fauna back into the area. The process of planning and replanting began in 2004 and continues till today.

In order to transform old mining ponds into picturesque lakes and wetlands, the herbaceous plants in the marshes surrounding the lakes and ponds were allowed to flourish in their natural state. Undisturbed, these plants grew and now serve as a protection ground for smaller fish, enabling aquatic life to thrive. 

Water control gates were placed in strategic areas to manage the water levels of the lakes and wetlands. Rainwater is channelled into water reserve ponds during monsoon seasons, and released to replenish the main lakes and downstream habitats during dry seasons to sustain the ecosystem within the development. Additionally, the riverbanks are reinforced naturally with hard materials such as riprap and gabion mattresses, as well as soft materials like bio-engineered vegetation to shield the riverbanks from future erosion and prevent the diversion of the Belat River, further safeguarding the aquatic ecosystem. 

The “nature-inspired” resort boasts an elegant design concept which comprises a layout and architecture that are seamlessly integrated with its surrounding lush landscape. Each aspect has been carefully crafted to incorporate the essence of “Mangala”, which means well-being in Sanskrit.

Yen So Sewage Treatment Plant (Yen So STP) and Yen So Park (YSP), Hanoi, Vietnam     

Located within the “Southern Gateway” of Hanoi in Hoang Mai district, Yen So Park is one of Hanoi’s biggest green lungs – providing 4 million Hanoians with a green sanctuary within the highly congested and dense capital city.

Beyond the parklands and five lakes, Yen So Park’s restoration is regarded as a remarkable turnaround story for the immense socio economic benefits unleashed: 

•             Alleviating chronic, decades old wastewater and sewage issues in south Hanoi

•             Reducing prevalence of water borne diseases

•             Appreciation of land values in the surrounding vicinity.

•             Enabling more land to be opened up for much needed quality housing

•             Helping to rebrand south Hanoi as an attractive location vis-à-vis the North

•             Facilitating transfer of much needed knowledge and technology to locals

Undertaken on a Build, Operate and Transfer (“BOT”) the rehabilitation would entail Gamuda Land investing some USD237 million over a 7-8 year period for the benefit of Hanoians before any material gains would be seen.

By adopting a holistic approach and through various innovative methods and technologies, the entire project consisting of the desludging of the five lakes, the sewage treatment plant (“STP”) construction and other elements were completed on time and within budget and handed over to local authorities in August 2013. The restored Yen So park was opened to the public in 2014.

In the process, Vietnam’s first state-of-the-art, 4th generation, Sequencing Batch Reactor (“SBR”) STP was implemented.

Engine House, Harbin, China

Engine House, located at Hailin City, China and established in 1903, represents the typical railway facility among the buildings along Chinese Eastern Railway for its design and typical meaning. It’s certified as the National Key Cultural Relics Unit in 2006. 

The project covers an area of approximately 5,000 m². The restored objects consists of engine house and affiliated facilities including boiler room, dispatching room for railway interruption, circular turntable with adjustable direction of the locomotive and its connected tracks.

The engine house locates at circumference with 2,160m². The overall structure is stone foundation, simple brick walls, reinforced pilasters, fifteen concrete arch roofs supported by steel columns and beams and the tin roof. Fifteen brick-connected pediment cornices on the façade door create the orderly and graceful skyline. Multi-layered brick trimmings and pendants reflect Russian architectural style in early times with high historical, scientific, artistic and social value.

The restoration engineering strictly obeys the following principles: authenticity of historical remains, identifiability of new and old materials and reversibility of engineering practices. Guiding under the principles of conserving original location, condition and appearance, the safety dangers of architectural structure is addressed and the historical information of the architecture is preserved with the aesthetic sense of clean and vicissitudes. The reference and experience are also provided for the construction of heritage architectural implementation and material selection with similar type in high altitude.

After the restoration, Hengdaohezi engine house has been opened to the public as Chinese Eastern Railway Transport Museum. The exhibition considers the Twists and turns of Chinese Eastern Railway and hundreds of years of transport lines as the theme. 

From the urgent restoration project to the vital historical landscape without losing the original charm, Hengdaohezi engine house has been one of the iconic cultural and tourism landscapes with theme of Sino-Russian relationship.

Oasia Hotel Downtown, Singapore          

Oasia Hotel Downtown is built on a government land sales site in Tanjong Pagar, an evolving precinct that straddles the old and new faces of downtown Singapore. An integrated hotel-office development comprising a 314-room business hotel and small strata offices, Oasia Hotel Downtown brings to life new interpretations of the live-work-play environment in an urban setting with its distinctive architecture. Its façade features prominent red cladding designed to support creepers and flowering plants which rise to form a living green skin. The building has an overall green replacement of over 10 times the site area.

The greenery is enhanced by alternating 30-metre tall sky gardens and sleek architectural details – all part of the passive sustainable designs integrated into the architectural concept to harness natural energy. Light and nature are woven together with the spaces within the development, creating open, functional and comfortable tropical spaces filled with greenery, natural light and fresh air offering both guests and occupants of building a green respite in the heart of the city. 

The lush plantings and waterscapes in the elevated gardens serve as multiple ground levels in the sky, creating large public areas for recreation and drawing people up to mingle and form communities. The development also incorporates an organic-themed interior design by Spanish interior designer Patricia Urquiola. Oasia Hotel Downtown’s design focus on nature and wellness has made the building much more welcoming, humane and liveable amidst an urban landscape of concrete, steel and glass.

The Evolution Tower is a futuristic space, implementation of the boldest fantasies and ambitions. The Evolution Tower, whose shape resembles the infinity sign, constantly aspires skywards – towards new business achievements, achievements of the next level.

Evolution Tower, a 51-storeyed spiral skyscraper, is a brilliant architectural centerpiece of the business area Moscow City, a unique urban complex which has no parallels in Russia and was created as a business area to unite business, residential apartments and leisure. This integrated territory comprises office space filled with light and air, retail and leisure galleries, 3-level 1,350-slot underground car-park and green walking area with cascade fountains connecting the subway and Bagration Bridge.

The tower's facade looks like a one-piece spiral-twisted glass shell emphasizing the lightness and dynamics of a shape evolving contrary to the gravity force. As of today, this fixed glazing is the world's biggest cold-bent facade with the building having the world's largest floor turning angle (3 degrees) and the entire tower's turning angle being 153 degrees.

The National Taichung Theater designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, Japanese architectural master Toyo Ito, has the world's first curved wall structural system. Architect Toyo Ito's curved wall construction method is a remarkably unique architectural design and construction method; the entire building is full of curves and curved surfaces, which symbolizes the Sound Cave that returns to the nature. There may be buildings in the world that are partially constructed with curved walls, but there are no buildings that use the structure of curved walls as the main body. The National Taichung Theater does not have a single structural pillar in the entire building; its construction method is extremely complex and it was an unprecedented challenge for the design and construction team.

After ten years of hard works and great efforts, this phenomenal building was completed under the collaboration between the organization and various engineering teams. The National Taichung Theater will become an important developmental base for performing arts in Taiwan, and it will be a new and remarkable world-class landmark in the central area of Taiwan.

SOCSO Tun Razak Rehabilitation Centre (TRRC) is Asia’s first rehabilitation complex that combines medical and vocational rehab with an allied health institute. Under the Malaysian Social Security Organisation’s (SOCSO) “Return To Work” programme, disabled patients with insurance undergo physical rehabilitation and vocational training in order to rejoin the workforce as quickly and healthy as possible.

Instead of sterile utilitarianism characteristic of traditional hospital facilities, the TRRC consciously adopts resort-like environment to remove the stigma associated with rehabilitation in the hope of expediting the healing process.

NURTURING ENVIRONMENT

Beside expressing “Journey to Healing” and commitment to “Access for all” through architectural design, the building also employ state-of –the-art technologies to protect the environment. To save energy while optimising patient comfort, the building automation system also feature smart temperature control that automatically regulate air conditioning. Passive cooling principles are also employed throughout the entire complex by maximising natural lighting and ventilation.

In addition to serving as a walkway and buggy path, the primary spine connecting all the buildings also serves as an exercise platform and follow the existing terrain with a variety of gradients. Creepers planted along the primary spine form a vertical garden, surrounding patients in greenery as they are transported between buildings and clusters beneath a canopy of flowers.

Tun Razak Rehabilitation Centre (TRRC) is more than an architecturally distinct one-stop shop for medical rehabilitation, vocational training and future rehabilitation personnel development. The base of the success is – as always – the location. But in this case the location is also a result of the last 15 years work of the developer. Each building is part of this story as a mosaic in a jigsaw puzzle. Nokia Skypark’s role was to highlight the eastern end of the promenade and the architecture of this building fulfils this requirement.
